Clotilde Labruce Burcher

Clotilde Labruce Burcher, age 92, of Wake Forest, NC, passed away around 3am Friday morning, March 18, 2022. Clotilde was born to George Albert Labruce and Clothilde Geisendorfer on April 22,1929 in Mullins, S.C. She grew up on Pawley’s Island with her two sisters who are living today, Anne L Fox of Myrtle Beach, SC and Jacqueline L Altman of Conway, SC.

She married Clyde S Sawyer in 1948 and lived on a farm for 20 years raising their three children. Clotilde was active within the scouting community, supporting the Boy Scout troop as Den Mother and acting as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. She was loved for her kindness and generosity and respected by all in the community.

Clotilde attended East Carolina University to finish her degree in Education, with a specialization in Biology. She taught at Columbia High School and when the family moved to Raleigh in 1972, she taught at Broughton High School for the remainder of her 20-year career. Her favorite part of teaching was being the facilitator of the peer counseling groups. She loved being a part of her students personal growth.

A few years after her marriage to Clyde ended, she met and married Edward G Burcher in March 1976. Throughout their marriage Ed and Clotilde moved often and lived in different locations including Boulder, CO area, Cottonwood, AZ, but mostly they lived within the Raleigh area, as Clotilde always considered Raleigh her home.

Clotilde loved and respected nature, so it is only fitting that her birthday became known as Earth Day. She loved to create and make things with her hands. She engaged in multiple creative activities throughout her life. Besides other multiple crafts, she started beading and silk ribbon embroidery making beautiful pouch necklaces. She painted off and on throughout her life, starting with oils and then acrylics. She painted still lifes, landscapes and other unusual settings with great skill.

Clotilde was an active supporting member of Eckankar for over 40 years. She was known for her innovative tools and perspectives for teaching within the community. She served as an ECK cleric and officiated many worship services in Raleigh.

Clotilde Burcher leaves behind her memory to; her loving husband Edward Burcher; her sisters mentioned above, her children, two sons Steven S Sawyer of Payson, AZ and Bruce D Sawyer of Roper and her daughter Clothilde E Canale of Anthem, AZ; her multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren specially to include Brandi Sawyer Smyth of Roper, NC, Giovanni S Canale of Phoenix, AZ, and Cianchino S Canale of Mesa, AZ.

A memorial service will be held Friday, March 25 at 2pm at the ECK center in Raleigh. The address of the service location is 6001 Chapel Hill Road, Suite 103, Raleigh, NC, 27607.
