Millard Gene Spence

Millard Eugene “Gene” Spence, 76, of Raleigh went home to be with the Lord on September 12, 2017. Gene was born in Raleigh to the late Rev. B.M. & Lavina Spence as the youngest of 10 children. Gene loved southern gospel music and spent many years sharing the gospel in song with the Gospel Melody Boys, the Gospel Ambassadors, the Mount Vernon Gospel Quartet and Once for All. Gene retired from Bell South in 1996 after 30 years of service. Gene loved the Lord, loved his family and loved traveling and being around his friends.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Bay Leaf Baptist Church, 12200 Bayleaf Church Road, Raleigh. Burial to follow at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens, Wake Forest.
Gene is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn Spence of Raleigh, his son Mike Spence and wife Lisa of Wake Forest, grandson Andy Spence and wife Elise of Wake Forest, grandson Zack Spence and wife Sarah of Huntersville and granddaughter Merrie Spence of Wake Forest. He is also survived by his sister Jane Barham of Wake Forest, sister Katherine Mashburn of Fuquay-Varina, brother James Spence of Wake Forest, brother Boyd Spence and wife Jewell of Lumberton, brother Ernest Spence and wife Betty Jean of Greenville, sister Carolyn Doepner and husband Roland of Spartanburg, SC and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Nathan Spence, sister Margaret Tucker and sister Maxine Spence.
Flowers are welcomed but in lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to: Gideons International Raleigh Northcamp, PO Box 99557 Raleigh, NC 27624.
The family will be present 6:00-8:00 pm Friday, September 15, 2017 at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 405 S. Main St., Wake Forest
