S.L. "Pete" Colbert

June 22, 1927 ~ November 15, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old

S.L. “Pete” Colbert passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on Wednesday, November 15, 2017. He was born to William Bryant Colbert and Rosa Faulkner Colbert on June 22, 1927, on the family farm in the Red Bud community of Franklin County. With his family he attended Red Bud Baptist Church where, as a teenager, he met Lucy Leonard, his future wife. He graduated from Gold Sand High School in 1944 and went to work at Burlington Industries in Franklinton shortly thereafter. In 1948, Pete and Lucy married and moved to Franklinton. He retired from Burlington in 1986 as their Training Manager, ending a 42 year career, and was the last employee to leave the plant when it closed.

Pete was very active in his community and church. He served on the Franklinton City Schools Board of Education for many years and was an original member of the Franklin County Water and Sewer Authority. He loved the Lord and was very passionate about his faith. He became a member of Franklinton Baptist Church in 1948 and served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, church treasurer, deacon, and church Trustee. He also served on the General Board of the NC Baptist State Convention for one term. He spent his life serving the Lord by serving others.

Pete was a very talented craftsman who lovingly built furniture for his family, including dinner tables with benches cherished by his children and grandchildren. He even built his beloved cabin on his home place in Red Bud.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 69 years, Lucy Leonard Colbert; daughter and son-in-law Karen and Jesse Preddy of Franklinton; son and daughter-in-law Kenny and Sue Colbert of Huntersville; grandchildren Aaron Wright and wife Lisa of Wake Forest; Caroline Wright Carroll and husband Kevin of Lexington, Va; and Pete Colbert of Raleigh; great grandchildren Peyton, Cole, and Lyndon Wright and Luke and Levi Carroll. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kenan Colbert Koll, of Charleston, SC, son-in-law Randy Wright,  his parents, and his brothers, Furman and Dalton Colbert.

A memorial service will be held at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon November 19, 2017 in the Franklinton Baptist Church with the Rev. David Averette officiating.

Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Kenan Colbert Koll Scholarship Fund 8723 Ledbury Court Huntersville, NC 28078.

A reception will be held in the church fellowship building immediately following the service.
