Toni Marsh (83) of Williamsburg, VA passed away September 7, 2018 from complications related to a courageously fought battle with brain cancer.
Toni was preceded in death by her husband Barry B. Marsh. She is survived by her loving family - children Lisa Marsh Breen (Anthony), Laurie Marsh Baker (Marvin), Christopher Marsh (Allison), Lindsay Marsh Gallagher (James); grandchildren Conor Breen, Brendan Breen, Eric Baker (Suzanne), Jason Baker (Rachel), Emily Baker-Orr (Ben), Adam Baker, Alaina Baker, Olivia Marsh, Hannah Marsh, William Marsh, Patrick Gallagher, Peter Gallagher, and Erin Gallagher, and great-granddaughter Anderson Baker.
She was born in Marblehead MA, and was a graduate of Marblehead High School. She graduated from Connecticut College (New London) and completed graduate work in Elementary Education at American International College in Springfield MA.
Toni was a dedicated elementary school teacher in Massachusetts, and was a home hospital tutor for Rochester NY City Schools. She also excelled at her second career in journalism, first as a proofreader for over 10 newspapers in the Rochester, NY suburbs and then as a copy editor for 11 years at The Virginia Gazette.
Toni was an active member of Wellspring United Methodist Church, where her favorite ministries included teaching pre-K Sunday School classes for over 15 years and working with the homeless food and shelter ministries. She served the church in many unassuming, selfless ways. She faithfully volunteered for many local Williamsburg charities, including the Harbor Shelter. She was an active member of the James City County Republican Committee.
In addition to her family, she leaves behind many friends from her high school and college years, as well as dear neighbors, her church family, former coworkers and fellow volunteers from decades well- lived in the Williamsburg community. She will be remembered for her tenacity, lively personality, sense of humor and pride in her family. At her request, the family will gather at a beach to celebrate her life. Special music will be provided by son- in law Anthony Breen and grandson Conor Breen of the Highland Light Scottish Pipe Band.
The family wishes to thank the medical team at Duke University’s Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center for their outstanding care and compassion shown during her illness.
