Doris Mallory

May 1, 1944 ~ July 18, 2021 (age 77) 77 Years Old

Tribute

Mrs. Doris Taylor Mallory began life’s journey on May 1, 1944 in Talladega County, AL to the parentage of Judy Wynn and William Taylor.  Doris accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and joined the New Maryland Missionary Baptist Church. She was educated in the Talladega County public schools and attended Phyllis Wheatly High School.

At 19 years old, Doris took a life-defining leap of faith and answered the call of her childhood sweetheart, John Mallory, to move from Talladega, AL to Plainfield, NJ. The high school sweethearts married on May 29, 1963, and they raised 5 children together. She was a homemaker at heart and loved caring for and supporting her husband and children.

Doris loved to laugh, to enjoy herself. An avid dominos player with a competitive spirit, you could find her laughing loudly as she beat everyone in backgammon, dominos, or cards. She was fiercely competitive. She also loved listening to gospel music, attending church, and watching crime drama tv (Matlock, Murder She Wrote, Columbo, and Walker Texas Ranger), but she also loved the peace and quiet solitude of sitting in nature.

Doris understood the importance of education, and she instilled that value within the family. She ensured her children were disciplined in their studies, valued good grades, and were prepared for college.

At her core, Doris was a natural caregiver, not only of her children, but for children of family and friends throughout her life. Leaning into her stores of care and compassion, she opened her heart and home as a foster parent. She volunteered wherever she was needed, from her son's Boy Scout troop to high school band fundraisers. Where she could help, she would. It was her quiet but all-powerful superpower; she was a mother to all.

On the afternoon of July 18, 2021, Doris began her eternal journey.  She was preceded in her passing by her husband, John Mallory, her parents William Taylor and Judy Wynn, three brothers, Willie Taylor, James Taylor and J.D. Taylor, and six sisters, Frances McKenzie, Carolynn Taylor, Evelyn Swain, Annie Thornton, Dell Cass, and Bertha Stockdale.  She leaves to cherish her memories two sisters: Sally Smokes and Mary Harvey, four daughters: Deborah (Barry) Smith, Donna (Earl) Crenshaw, Teresa (Manny) Crowther, and Juanita Mallory; one son: Jimmy (Shon) Mallory, 14 grandchildren, one great granddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 23, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. in the Bright Funeral Home chapel.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday 12:30 - 1:00 P.M.  Burial will follow in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
