Doris Elane Stewart

January 19, 1951 ~ July 23, 2020 (age 69) 69 Years Old

Tribute

Doris Elane Stewart, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend soared into the heavens on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at the age of 69.

Doris was born in Utica, Mississippi, on January 19, 1951 to Wilbur and Rebecca Finley. The second of nine children, she participated in the Upward Bound program for teens going onto college, and ultimately attended Aurora University in 1969.

She married James Leonard Stewart and had successful careers working with Illinois Bell, Show Time Cable Company, and Allnet Long Distance Telephone Company, always rising in the ranks, no doubt due to her magnetic personality and love of reading. Doris was exceptionally smart and a master of random facts with an impeccable memory. If there was ever a Trivia Game Show to be found, others just need not apply. Doris would have been the winner.

Her greatest achievement by far, of course, was raising six successful children of whom she was insanely proud. It was not uncommon to see Doris’s love and pride beaming from her face. While Doris had a fun albeit stubborn, sassy, and sarcastic side, her bright soul and always sunny smile was on display to all who knew her and shines through in each of her children.

Doris was an avid butterfly collector and loved all things butterflies (we’re pretty sure the butterflies carried her to heaven. Or she carried them all with her. Or both.) She also loved gardening, cooking (especially if it involved a crock pot), crafts of all kinds, puzzles, road trips, television game shows, and being close to any type of water. Music made her soul sing, and she was the original “K-Town Has Talent” organizer! Her favorite song was Rise and she loved everything from Motown and R&B to contemporary Pop.

Doris joins her beloved daughter, Kenyattah Mathis, and her parents, Wilbur and Rebecca, in the glorious fields of gold in heaven. Carrying on her loveable and feisty spirit on earth are her children Keanya Phelps (Willie “Ernest”); James Lawrence “Larry" (Khadija); KarenElaine; Shawna (Timothy); and Jeannette (Aaron); along with all of her siblings, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and 12 fur-baby grandchildren! That’s a lot of Doris still smiling here on earth!

A memorial is planned for Spring 2021 with details announced at a later time. The family requests donations be made to Red Cross, American Stroke Association, or Aging Life Care association.
