Tribute

Douglas Ray Holmes died peacefully at his home on July 16, 2021. He was born to the late Fred and Ethel Holmes on November 15, 1932.  He was also preceded in death by his wife Myrtle Cooke Holmes, brothers Yates, F C and Jimmy Holmes and sister Nadine Lawson.

Douglas is survived by his three daughters Elaine Johnson (Jimmy), Darnell Alford (Danny) and Rochelle Gilliam (Wayne).  He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Dana Perry (Grady), Jacqueline Holden (Ernie), Chuck Tingen, Michael Gilliam (Kim), Tori Inscoe (Brannon), Kristi Van Valkenburgh (Ryan) and Grant Gilliam (Heather). He was Pa Pa to his grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Betty Woodcock.

Douglas was a devoted member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. He served many years as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and member of the church choir. He loved his church and church family.  He touched many lives and was bold in his witness for Jesus Christ.

A special thank you to Transitions Hospice Care and to the care givers, Debbie Smith, Tammy Parrish, Diane Shadrach, Jennifer Allen and Tracy Collins, who took such excellent care of Douglas during his brief illness. A special thank you to Rahma Azzan, his nurse, who was so dedicated to his care.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Transitions Hospice Care or Flat Rock Baptist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 11 o’clock Monday morning July 19, 2021 in the Flat Rock Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
