E. Worley Massey

January 28, 1940 ~ March 30, 2024 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Esmond Worley Massey, 84, of the Wake Cross Roads Community, passed away on the evening of Saturday, March 30, 2024. He was born in Wake County, the son of the late Margaret and V.V. Massey, and was a longtime member of Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church. Worley graduated from Rolesville High School in 1958. He worked hard his entire life, but made sure to enjoy every second along the way. Before settling in at Marshall Oil Company, Worley was a brakeman on the railroad, a driver at Pine State Creamery and helped his uncle in the HVAC business, eventually running his own HVAC business. He worked at Marshall Oil Company for 26 years and was the owner of Wake Tire for over 36 years.

Worley was passionate about traveling. He visited almost every state in the US by way of his 1960’s Dodge Travco motor home, with family members and friends in tow. He enjoyed telling the story of meeting Elvis at Graceland on July 4, 1969, during one of his many adventures. Nothing made Worley happier than going on a cruise with anyone who wanted to join, but particularly his family and close friends. Worley cruised all around the world and gave new meaning to the phrase, “never met a stranger.”

Worley loved animals of all kinds, but was particularly fond of his dogs, horses, and baboons. He rescued his first baboon, Scoopy, from an exotic animal owner in Concord, NC. This was just the beginning of what would become Worley and Nancy’s long history of adopting animals in need of a new home.

While his hobbies are too numerous to mention here, he was an avid barefoot water skier, enjoyed snow skiing and riding motorcycles, flew a helicopter and owned a number of hovercrafts.

There was nothing more important to Worley than his family. While his love for his family was evident throughout his entire life, he felt like he had won the lottery when his family moved out to join him and Nancy on what became the family compound.

He will be remembered for his contagious smile and extraordinary sense of humor that could light up a room and provoke uncontrollable laughter, even at the most inappropriate times.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM, Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Strickland Massey; son, Allen Massey and wife, Lorie; Allen's mother, Nancy Montague Massey;  grandchildren, Will (Julia) and Lee (Jesse); great-grandchildren, Will, Jaxton, Worth, and Ridge (on the way); siblings, Betty Lou Horton and Robert Massey (Joyce); sister-in-law, Sandra Massey; “adopted sister”, Mary Lou Penny (Tom). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Victor Massey and Marvin Massey.
