Hatherly Cory Paderick

January 20, 1932 ~ January 6, 2019 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Tribute

Hatherly “Hal” Cory Paderick, 86, passed away at home on January 6, 2019, following a valiant 20-year battle with prostate cancer.
A native of Kinston, Hal was a graduate of Grainger High School (1950) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy (1954). Following service as a line officer in the U.S. Navy which included a tour in Naples, Italy, Hal returned to his hometown and opened Paderick’s Pharmacy, where over the next 35 years his employees and loyal customers became his extended family.
Hal was a man of many hobbies and talents, including boating on the waters of eastern North Carolina, teaching his children to water ski, serving as a leader in the local U.S. Power Squadron, playing the saxophone and organ, woodworking, watching Tar Heel basketball and photography. In the mid-1980s, he discovered a new passion when he cleared the land and built a home at his grandparents’ homeplace in the Woodington/Southwood area of Lenoir County and began raising and showing horses. The grandchildren loved weekends at The Farm where they could ride the horses, run free, and help Granddaddy in the stables, and Hal’s cousins loved visiting and reminiscing about their fun-filled childhood Sunday afternoons.
He was an active member of Gordon Street Christian Church for more than 60 years following his baptism in 1948. More recently, he enjoyed the services and his church family at Hope Lutheran Church in Wake Forest.
Surviving are his loving wife, Carole Anderson Paderick and her family; stepchildren of 43 years, Connie Dorn Rist of Charlotte, Lenny Dorn (Paula) of Shallotte, Lynette Dorn Johnson of New York City and Carol Dorn Sanders (Jeff) of Raleigh; children, Ann Paderick Price; Louise Paderick Edwards; Henry Paderick; Pamela Paderick Zollo; sisters-in-law, Hilda Paderick and Barbara Paderick Kellum; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins—all of whom thought the world of their beloved “Doodle.”
Hal was preceded in death by his father, Clarence R. Paderick; his mother, Barbara Rouse Paderick; his wife, Barbara Dorn Paderick; his wife, Carolyn Barnes Paderick; and his brothers, Victor L. Paderick and Dr. Clifton W. Paderick.
Visitation will be at Hope Lutheran Church, 3525 Rogers Road in Wake Forest, NC, on Friday, January 11, 2019, at 10 a.m., with a memorial service at 11 a.m. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Park, 4488 US-70, Kinston, NC, 28504.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to: Dr. Peter Watson and the nurses who cared for Hal in Kinston, as well as Dr. Jeremiah Boles and nurses at UNC Rex Cancer Center (especially Nurse/Patient Educator Christy Rhodes, who brightened every visit); Case Manager Brittany and the team at Transitions LifeCare; the staff at The Gardens at Wakefield Plantation; and the team at Aware Senior Care.
