Tribute

Jasper Latney “Jack” Rogers Sr., age 78, of Zebulon, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 21, 2021. He was born in Riverdale, Maryland, Prince George County on March 22, 1943 to Clellie Mae Pulley and Royal Pittman “Pitt” Rogers, Sr. He attended Oak Ridge Military Academy and Guilford College. Jack was described as an entrepreneur in his own right.

After working as warehouse foreman at Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, and shop steward for the Teamsters at Carolina Freight, he became an independent long haul truck driver with his truck, Old Yeller. Jack then built two businesses from the ground up, J.L. Rogers Trucking, and B&J Tractor Trailer Repair, which he operated and managed until he retired to his farm in Zebulon to enjoy raising horses and cattle.

While a youth, Jack grew up in Rolesville on his family’s farm, attended Rolesville Baptist Church, and played baseball and football in the original Rolesville High School before relocating to what is now Rogers Road (named after his family) in Wake Forest, after college. A man of many talents, Jack was an accomplished race car driver in the Carolinas as a young man. He was also highly admired on the rodeo circuit, earning many awards and trophies, in the calf roping and barrel racing events, while riding his horse, Lonesome Red Man.

Additionally, he was one of the original members of the Wake Forest Country Club, where he became a scratch golfer, placing in or winning many of the tournaments held there and across the Carolinas. His children recall his love of fishing and trick water skiing, and share fond memories of summers spent at Kerr Lake in Virginia. Jack was a member of the Teamsters Union, American Turf Grass Association, a lifetime member of the American Angus Association, and various rodeo organizations.

Jack is survived by his children, Jasper Latney “Lee” (Melissa Carte) Rogers Jr., Clellie Rogers Allen, and Anna Spencer (Max) Rogers; brothers, Raymond “Ray” Ludwell Rogers and Royal “Roy” Pittman Rogers Jr.; grandchildren, Jasper David “JD” Rogers, Bradley Marshal Rogers, David (Shelby) Allen, Jonathan Allen, Benjamin Allen, Caitlyn Allen, Caroline Allen, Emma Jean “EJ” Rogers, Logan Matthew Rogers, Samuel Bodhi Rogers; great grand-daughter, Allison Allen, and previous spouses, Polly Hart Brank and Rebecca “Becky” Ogburn Rogers. He was preceded in death by his son, Clinton Howard Rogers, and great granddaughter Morgan Lynne Allen.

A celebration of life service will be held at Jack’s farm, 6 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2021, ahead of the 97th consecutive William Washington Rogers Family Reunion on Sunday, July 25.
