John Steven Gretsuk, 71, of Wake Forest passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the VA Medical Center in Durham, NC after a long battle with cancer. He was born on October 4, 1946 in New York, NY. John spent his childhood in Staten Island, NY, where he first met his current wife, and later lived in New Jersey, upstate New York, and lastly in Shelbyville, TN before relocating to Wake Forest in 2011.
John was retired after a long and varied career in finances. He worked the longest for AAA Oil Pollution in the pollution clean-up industry as a comptroller. Most recently he worked in management for Wal-mart stores in western Tennessee. John graduated from New Dorp High School in 1965 and was a member of the Seabees. Immediately following graduation he was enlisted in the Navy and served in Vietnam. Some of the things that John liked best were spending time with his family, following the Yankees, keeping up with politics and current events, and restoring cars. John was well liked by everyone and will be missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his wife of five years, Sunny Gretsuk, of Wake Forest; sister Marie Sheppard of Tullahoma, TN, brother Steven Gretsuk & wife Kim of Alexandria, VA; two sons from a previous marriage: Jay Gretsuk & wife Shannon of Indian Trail, NC, and Nick Gretsuk & wife Denise of Long Island, NY; wife Sunny’s daughter Kim Nugent & husband John of Wake Forest, NC, and son Steven Kovach & wife Jami of Houston, TX; grandchildren Taylor Gretsuk, Kelly Gretsuk, Antonia Gretsuk (and her mother, Donna Draisin), Evan Nugent, Simon Nugent, Abby Nugent, Celeste Nugent, and Travis Nugent; nieces and nephews Allison Gretsuk, Tamara Erickson, Patrick Gretsuk, Jean Marie Sheppard, and Eddie Walsh. John was preceded in death by his parents, Steven & Mildred Gretsuk.
