John Henry Lewis, Jr.

John Henry Lewis, Jr., 70, of Wake Forest passed away on Sunday July 17, 2022 at Duke Raleigh Hospital. He was born in Greensboro, NC son of the late Doris Craven Lewis and John Henry Lewis, Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Smith Lewis; daughter, Cory Jean of Chiang Mai, Thailand; sister Lou Whitt and brother-in-law Dick Whitt of Colfax, NC; sister-in-law Karen Smith and partner Donnie Reid of Carolina Beach, NC. Also, surviving are his aunt Joan Craven Hendren and uncle Glenn Hendren of Greensboro, NC; multiple cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by grandparents Robert and Carrie Lewis, Cliff and Ina Craven, brother-in-law Owen Smith (Berrie), and sister-in-law Carolyn Goodwin.

John graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BS in Biology. He retired as a Sales and Marketing Director in Special Products with Praxair and prior to that, The BOC Group.

He enjoyed fishing immensely, creating stained glass art, reading, and simply being at the beach. He had a special interest in gemology, classic cars, and freehand sketching.

John was a person of quick hilarious comebacks, harmless sarcasm, love of a quiet and private life. He and Susan recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. Among their secrets of success were constant humor, uncanny mutual interests, and the pleasures of enjoying their home, sunsets and moonrises. She adored him from the day they met. He cherished her, protected her, loved her with a special heart. They were blessed with Cory, who enriched their lives with grace, beauty, courage and an immeasurable volume of love.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon July 23, 2022 in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home, 405 South Main Street, Wake Forest, NC.

Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
