Kathryn A. Gemmell, 86, of Wake Forest passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022. Kathryn was the wife of Michael F. Gemmell her husband of 63 years, and was the only child of Michael and Mary (Brogno) Yannarell. Born in Hazelton, PA, July 14, 1936, she graduated from Hazelton High School and the Ashland, PA State Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for many years in Allentown, PA as a registered nurse and later for years at a local Physician’s office for a period of four or five years.
She moved to Lima, Ohio, in 1978 for approximately nine years, and she accompanied her husband and found life busy in the Midwest. Kathryn was instrumental in the conversion of an old vacant convent to an assisted living facility for the elderly, for her church parish. Later, Kathryn started and operated, a full-service children’s day care, serving 100 children daily, for seven years, before returning to Allentown.
In 1988, she accepted a position at the Lehigh Valley Medical Facilities in Allentown records department, upon her return to Allentown where she remained until she retired in 2001.
She has been a generous public servant, volunteering at Brunswick County Hospital in NC, logging more than 2500 volunteer hours, after relocating to Supply, North Carolina, in 2004. In 2015 Kathryn moved to Wake Forest, NC, where she resided until 2020, when she became a long term care patient at Louisburg NC, Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, having been afflicted with Dementia.
Kathryn was tireless in support of family and will be missed greatly. She is a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, in Wake Forest NC.
She is survived by her husband, Michael, her son Timothy and wife Michelle, granddaughter Nicole of Leesburg, grandsons, Jeffrey, presently of King of Prussia, PA and Zachary of Durham, NC and their daughter Tammy Emery and husband Edward from Carolina Beach, NC and a granddaughter Andrea who resides in Bethlehem, PA.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 o’clock on Friday morning, November 25, 2022 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 520 W Holding Ave, Wake Forest, NC 27587.
Friends may visit with the family from 10:15 AM until 11:00 AM at the church. Inurnment will follow in the church memory garden.
