Lee Roy James Jr. age 69 of Raleigh passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 11, 2023. Lee was born in Harrison County, Mississippi on October 31, 1953 to Lee Roy James Sr. and Palma (Ryland) James. Mr. James served his grateful country in the US Army with the 101st Airborne and was a graduate of York College in Pennsylvania, where he earned his Bachelor degree in Marketing. He retired from Nationwide Insurance where he was a manager of the catastrophe team for the state of North Carolina.
Lee received a silver medal for the heavyweight division of weightlifting in the 1976 Olympics and was inducted in to the Weightlifting Hall of Fame in York, PA and the York Barbell Hall of Fame. Lee was a deacon and Awana teacher at Bay Leaf Baptist Church in Raleigh. He was also an advocate for the Love Life Program.
Mr. James is survived by his wife Lori (Harding) James; sons Steven W. James and wife Tracey; William James and fiancé Stephanie Struzik; daughters Shannon H. James and Abigale L. James; 4 grandchildren Kayla, Casey, Ruby, Jack; mother Palma James; brother Dennis James; sister Terry Allen.
The family will receive friends at Bay Leaf Baptist Church on Saturday, February 18, 2023 from 11am to 12:30pm, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 1pm. Interment will follow in the Pine Forest Memorial Garden, in Wake Forest. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Wounded Warrior Project 1990 Fordham Dr. Suite 100 Fayetteville, NC 28304
