M. James “Jim” Johnson, Jr.

WAKE FOREST– Macon J. Johnson, Jr. passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2017 of natural causes. Known to his many friends and family as Jim and to his lovely mother as Jimmy, Jim was born in South Mills, NC on April 15, 1936. Jim was preceded in death by his mother Doris Burnham Johnson, his father Macon J. Johnson, Sr., and his three best friends, his loving dogs Smokey 1, Smokey 2, and Susie.
Jim served in the 45th Air Force, worked as a NC Highway Patrolman, an investigator with the NC Department of Insurance, and a club golf pro in Wake Forest. Jim was the club pro at Paschal Golf Course for several years and at Horescreek Country Club (later known as Wake Forest Country Club). Jim also ran his father’s oil business in South Mills for a long period of time. A diehard NY Yankees fan and a UNC Tarheel fan for life, Jim cheered hard for his beloved Yankees and Tarheels in good times and not so good times.
Jim is survived by his three children, five grandchildren, and two ex-wives and a brother. His oldest child, Tammy J. Bryan and her husband Jim Bryan; his son Bradly J Johnson and his wife Eva S. Johnson; and his youngest daughter, Doris Vann Johnson; the mother of his children, Merritta W. Johnson; his ex-wife and closest friend in his later years, Anita Beck; grandchildren, Travis Johnson, Kallie J. Wulfkuhle (Nick), Jordan J. Bryan, Meghan Bryan Lucas and Morgan B. Johnson (Zack) and his closest friend in life, Bill Mangum,a brother from another mother, of Raleigh, and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 3:30 Thursday afternoon August 24, 2017 at Bright Funeral Home. Friends may visit with the family from 2-3:30 prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Wake County Animal Shelter.
