On May 22, 2019, Martha (Marty) Elaine Martin (nee Mims) suddenly passed away at the age of 78.
Marty was born on July 3, 1940, in Hickory, NC to William Mims and Pauline Lothridge. She left Hickory for the North African country of Tunisia in 1965 to serve in the Peace Corps, with the role of Secretary to the Director of the Peace Corps office. While living in Tunis, she met the charming Jackson Martin, who became her husband on August 6, 1966. Marty and Jack raised three children--Jennifer, Beth, and Andy—moving from Oklahoma to Florida to California to North Carolina. Marty worked for IBM for 15 years, in both San Jose, CA and Raleigh, NC. After retirement from IBM, Marty and Jack continued their adventure by moving to Washington state, then to Beaver, OH, then to Paducah, KY, and finally to Youngsville, NC.
While living in Washington, Marty earned an AA degree and became a successful real estate agent for Coldwell Banker. Her sincerity, warmth, and wit served her well in all her endeavors, and she formed many deep and lasting friendships everywhere she went.
Marty had a great zest for life. She could brighten any gathering, had excellent timing with jokes, good taste in decor and fashion, fierce love of her family, and deep compassion for animals. Marty was concerned with increasing justice, love, and joy in the world. Also, champagne. She touched many people’s lives, and will be missed by her surviving family: her husband Jack Martin; children Jennifer, Beth, and Andy; brother Larry Mims; grandchildren Zac, Alex, Amanda, and Drew; cat Max, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite local animal rescue in her name.
