Welcome to the memorial page for

Nancy Hutchins Pettigrew Gaino

May 25, 1945 ~ January 2, 2018 (age 72) 72 Years Old

On the first day and the first full moon of the Year of Our Lord 2018, Nancy Pettigrew Gaino, beloved and loving sister, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away unexpectedly and way too soon at her Raleigh home at the age of 72. The Wake Forest native and long-time Raleigh resident was born on May 25, 1945 to Edna Baum and Walter James Pettigrew.

Nancy graduated from Wake Forest High School in 1963. She has a successful career and worked for Asheville Industries as well as the Bank of Asheville. She spent most of her career at and retired from Genworth Financial in Raleigh, NC.

In 1967, Nancy married James Baynard Gaino and was the devoted mother of their two sons, Jim and Nick.

She is survived by her two sons (both in Easley, SC) James Baynard Gaino, Jr and his wife Kathy and Nicholas Brownlee Gaino and his wife Shawn and their daughter (and Nancy’s only grandchild and the light of her life) Olivia Brooke Gaino. She is also survived by her two sisters Anne Pettigrew Baker and Jane Pettigrew Brownlee Pharr (Allen) as well as a multitude of nephews, nieces, family and friends.

A true southern lady with a vivacious personality, Nancy was an engaging conversationalist and never met a stranger. She loved all animals but had a particular affinity for felines…her longtime pet Oliver (who preceded her in death) and the newer Lou Lou as well as the many feral cats she dedicated the time and resources to feed.

Nancy was strong in spirit and in her beliefs. She loved the Lord and the Word of God. She was a true Peacemaker in her family and a generous friend who was known for her sweet thoughtfulness and random acts of kindness as well as her quick laugh and even quicker wit.

To know Nancy was to love her. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all her knew her.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, January 7, 2017 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home, Wake Forest. Nancy’s nephew, the Reverend Dr. Robert MacSwain will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Safe Haven for Cats, 8431 Garvey Drive #137, Raleigh, NC 27616
