Robert Verne Guptill

Tribute

Robert “Bob” Guptill, 76, of Raleigh, NC passed away on July 7, 2022. Bob was born on May 15th, 1946 in Haverhill, Massachusetts (MA) to Verne and Phyllis Guptill. He grew up in Groveland, MA and graduated from Pentucket High School.  He graduated from the Corps of Cadets at Norwich University in 1968 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army received a master’s degree in education from Boston University in 1969. After completing active duty service in the United States Army. He served as a librarian in the Massachusetts public school system before becoming a systems analyst with Dynamics Research Corporation, where he spent the remainder of his career until his retirement in 2011.

He married Joan E. Talbot (1946-2007) on June 10, 1972 and they had two children, Jeffrey and Steven.

Bob served in several leadership positions for the Boy Scouts of America, including Scoutmaster of Troop 87 in Groveland, MA.  He is a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award from Lone Tree Council, Boy Scouts of America, awarded to Scouts of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service. He served in several positions for the town of Groveland including the Open Space Committee and the Cemetery Commission. A key achievement was leading the acquisition of additional land for the Meadow Pond Reservation in Groveland. After retirement, he focused on several areas of research, including the history of the towns of Groveland and Bradford and documenting the military service of the residents of Groveland, MA and Wake Forest, NC.  He was an avid supporter of the Norwich University Archives and Special Collections and the Sullivan Museum and History Center. He was a former president of the Norwich Museum Associates, lifetime member of the Friends of the Kreitzberg Library, a Two-Star general in the Partridge Society and received the Norwich University Board of Fellows medallion for outstanding service to the University.

He is survived by his sons Jeffrey and Steven Guptill; his brother Gary Guptill; and grandkids Mira and Alexander Guptill. Calling hours will be at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest, NC on July 11, 6-8 PM; H.L. Farmer & Sons in Haverhill, MA on July 15th, 4-6 PM. A service will be held at Riverview Cemetery in Groveland, MA on July 16th at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Transitions LifeCare Hospice, Raleigh, NC.
