Samuel Mark Chewning

Tribute

Mark went to be with his Lord and Savior August 10, 2018, at Duke University Hospital, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born July 2, 1954, at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, AZ. He grew up in Greenville, MS where he attended public schools and graduated from Greenville High School in 1973. He went on to pursue a career in the United States Navy where he attained the rank of First Class Petty Officer as an AMH1 (AW) before retiring after 21 years of service. He served in Desert Storm.

He married Donna Marie Stokes on December 3, 1983.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Louise Chewning of Greenville, MS; one brother, Billy Smoke of Hardin, TX; one uncle, Don “Smokey” Smoke of Greenville, MS; a brother-in-law, John Henley of Duck Hill, MS and a nephew, Chris Watkins of Harrison, AR.

Funeral services for Samuel Mark Chewning, also known as “Chew”, will be Friday, August 17, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home, Wake Forest, NC. Pastor Joel Close will officiate. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm in Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro.

Mark is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Donna Marie Chewning of Youngsville, NC; his daughter and son-in-law, Deana and Guy Burnham; two sons, Samuel T. Chewning and Danielle Chewning of St. Augustine, FL and Edward J. Chewning of Youngsville, NC and a daughter, Angelina Chewning of Youngsville, NC.; one brother, Daniel (Beverly) Chewning of Greenville, MS; and three sisters, Becky (Bill) Spatrisano of Jacksonville, FL; Kris Henley of Duck Hill, MS and Donna (Larry) Louviere of Bakersfield, CA.

He was affectionately known as “Pawpaw” by his 5 grandchildren who held a very special place in his heart; Joey Chewning, Aubree Burnham, Sophia Chewning, Lil Guy Burnham and Sawyer Chewning; and several nieces and nephews.

Mark’s family deeply appreciates the out-pouring of love and prayers from friends and family during his illness over the years. They especially want to thank his church family, Lifepointe Church and the community for their continued support.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 16, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 405 S. Main St., Wake Forest. (919) 556-5811.
