Shirley Haas Green

Tribute

Shirley Haase Green, age 92, passed away at her residence in Tega Cay, SC on August 18, 2021. She died of a broken heart, just 6 days after her beloved husband, Jack, had passed. Shirley and Jack were married for 70 years, after meeting on a blind date. She is survived by 2 children, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland and a graduate of UNC-Greensboro formerly known as Woman’s College, in 1951. She later earned her master’s degree at age 55 from Winthrop University. She worked as a physical education teacher in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System and retired after 32 years from CMS as the Curriculum Specialist for Physical Education and Dance. She began the first state supported dance program in the North Carolina public school system. She began her long teaching career at age 12 where she was the youngest swimming instructor at the YWCA in Baltimore, MD. Shirley taught thousands to swim instilling the utmost importance of water safety. Every time the boat left the dock, you knew she was going to ask, “Does everyone have a life jacket???” Shirley held many roles throughout her church life at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Charlotte, Christ the King Church, which she helped to start, and Lake Wylie Lutheran Church. Those that proceeded her in death include her husband, Jack Allen Green, Jr., her son, Jack Allen Green, III, her mother, Myrtle H Hoover, her father, Robert George Haase, Jr., her step father, Walter L Hoover, Jr.   Survivors include her daughter, Carol Myrtle Green, son, Walter C Green and wife Paula, daughter in law Sally G Green, five grandchildren, Jack Allen Green, IV. and wife Sarah, Mary Nell Kane and husband Tommy, Christopher G. Green and wife Sara, Leah B. Green, Jessica L Rushing and husband Tommy, four great grandchildren, Olivia Kane, Eliza Kane, Harris Green, Thomas Rushing, III. 

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, for both her and her husband, Jack, on August 22, 2021 at Christ the King Church, 13501 S. Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 28278.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.  A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, August 23, 2021 at Youngsville Town Cemetery in Youngsville, NC.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the Youngsville Museum of History - 120 W Franklin St Youngsville, NC, NC 27596.
