Tribute

Susie Merle Wesson, 100, of Temple Hills, Maryland, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2020 at Hillside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wake Forest, North Carolina.  She was born in Chatham County, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Charles Hinton Marks and Emma Elizabeth Johnson Marks.

Merle graduated from Moncure High School in Moncure, North Carolina, as valedictorian and was an avid basketball player.

After high school, in 1938, she entered Rex Hospital School of Nursing in Raleigh, North Carolina, graduating in 1941.  She then worked as a private duty nurse in Raleigh for a while.  In the late 1960’s, she returned to nursing, working as a registered nurse (RN) on a surgical floor at Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, DC, where she advanced to head nurse, before her retirement.

On March 28, 1942, she married William Temple Wesson, in Macon, Georgia.

She was a dedicated member of Corkran Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a choir member and active participant for over 50 years.

Merle was an amicable person with many interests, who enjoyed the company of family and friends.  She was an enthusiastic member of the local garden and homemakers’ clubs, and antique association.  She loved music and sang not only in the choir, but in church musical productions, as well.  She played piano beautifully.  She was gifted in the art of flower arranging and used flowers and plants from her own yard, when available, winning horticulture as well as design awards for her creations.  She was a talented amateur oil and watercolor artist, who won awards in both local and state competitions.  She enjoyed swimming, taking exercise classes at the local community college, and fishing.  She loved annual family trips to the seashore and traveling throughout the world.

She will be remembered as a wonderful mother and friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Temple Wesson; a son William Travis Wesson; brothers Larry Marks, James Marks, Wallace Marks, and Odell Marks; and a granddaughter Cherri Perschmann.  She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Ann Haigh and Susan Elizabeth Harrison; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held in Maryland at a later date.
