Virginia Patricia Stout

September 19, 1930 ~ September 14, 2020 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Tribute

Virginia Patricia Stout, 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 14, 2020. Affectionately known as Ginny, Grandma or Gigi, she passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her three children and two daughter-in-laws.

Ginny was born in Orange, New Jersey on September 19, 1930, to Hugh and Ann Koch. She was the second oldest of five girls, graduating from Orange High School and then attending secretarial school. She met David G. Stout, her husband of 60 years, when she was only 13. He joined the U.S. Army right out of high school, and they were married when she was 18. They had three children and traveled the world together, living in such places as Seattle, Alaska, Panama Canal Zone and Naples, Italy. Through the years they enjoyed boating, water skiing, and camping as a family, eventually moving to Tallahassee then Orlando after Dave’s retirement from the Army.

Ginny had a long career as a secretary and administrative assistant, beginning in Seattle and ending with jobs at Florida State University and University of Central Florida. She served for 16 years at UCF in the Office of Instructional Resources, the Library, Human Resources, the College of Education, and eventually the Office of the Provost.

Following her retirement, she and Dave concentrated on spending time with family and camping in their motorhome. They moved to Wake Forest, NC from Orlando in 1990. Shortly thereafter they joined Bay Leaf Baptist Church and were active in their Sunday school class, Keenagers, and various committees, as well as the local chapter of the Eastern Star. They were also members of Stony Hill Baptist Church for nine years when their grandson, Dr. Jamie Dew, was Pastor. Ginny participated in numerous women’s bible studies over the years and loved studying God’s Word. Sadly, Dave passed away from lung cancer in 2009.

Ginny has seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, who truly were the loves of her life. Her greatest joy was to be with them, cheering at games, watching dance performances, listening to piano recitals, playing card or board games, sharing meals, reading with them, or teaching her great-granddaughters to knit. She was active on social media, especially Facebook, in order to keep up with what everyone was doing. She was very tech savvy and had a memory that was sharp as a tack.

Following her lung cancer diagnosis in the summer of 2019, she decided it would be best to live with her daughter, Linda, just outside of Boone, NC. She moved from Atria Oakridge in Raleigh where she made lifelong friends and had lived independently for three years. She handled her immunotherapy treatments like a champ, and they attended church and women’s bible studies at Alliance Bible Fellowship. Ginny truly enjoyed High Country mountain living with cooler temperatures, a slower pace of life, birds galore, and plenty of wildlife including porch visits from a few black bears!

Ginny is survived by her three children: David G. Stout, Jr. and his wife Shannon, Linda Baker, John R. Stout and his wife JoAnn, as well as Debby Mitchell, Anne Stout, younger sister Clarissa “CC” Gerraty, her seven grandchildren and their spouses, her thirteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was deeply loved by all of her family and friends, and her presence in our lives will be sorely missed.

The funeral will be held at Bay Leaf Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC on September 19th, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Jamie K. Dew, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Stony Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Wake Forest. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Seby Jones Regional Cancer Center, Patient Emergency Fund, Appalachian Regional Healthcare System, 336 Deerfield Road, Boone, NC 28607 or Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge, Inc., 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777. The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses whose compassionate loving care made all the difference as we dealt with Ginny’s cancer and passing.
