Very sorry to hear about the passing of my college friend Tom Douglass. He was a person with interesting ideas, fun in his heart and good music on his stereo. I last saw him in 1989 when, even though I had not seen him in over a decade, we again fell into the easy conversation that we had during our school days. Naturally, I now regret not seeing him since then. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I did not know Tom personally, but I know his work well. His research and writing on West Virginian Breece Pancake was of tremendous interest and use to me in my own work. Also I had opportunity to review his manuscript on author Davis Grubb and again was greatly impressed by the depth and quality of his research. Academia and the literary world have lost a scholar who will be sorely missed.

Tom was a diligent scholar and so interested in literature and the contributions made by his fellow West Virginia authors.

I'm saddened by his death but pleased to know he finished his biography of Davis Grubb. I'm sure his scholarship and good humor will not be forgotten.

It was a pleasure to know him.

I would like to send my condolences to Tom's family. He was a great professor--brilliant, engaging, and funny--and a warm soul. His classes were always compelling, and he made it seem so effortless! I think that combination is a rare gift in a teacher, and he definitely had it. He will be greatly missed.

Working with Tom at ECU was an enriching experience as my career in Joyner Library came to a close. His vision and drive were largely responsible for the acquisition of the Stuart Wright Collection of books and manuscripts pertaining to southern writers. It is a remarkable legacy--one that will be of tremendous value to future students and scholars.

I am so sad to hear about this loss. We knew each other at UNC. The thing I remember most about Tom was how much he adored his daughters.

Dr. Douglass was my first contact with East Carolina University when I attended a series of talks he gave in Martin Memorial Library in Williamston on American Literature, as part of the 150th Centenary of the American Civil War. He kindly allowed me to sit in on some of his graduate classes at ECU, enabling me to rediscover hitherto atrophied parts of my brain, and encouraged me in applying to and gaining admittance to the Master’s Degree program. Illness prevented him from participating in the final stages of the undertaking as one of the original notables on the thesis committee. Part of my acknowledgements in the final document would not have been complete without a special tribute to him as without his encouragement the thesis wouldn’t even have been started. I am sure many people's lives will have been enriched by knowing him.
