Janice Rae Douglass

Janice Rae Douglass, 87, passed peacefully on February 10, 2018. Born in East Chicago Hospital to Edna and Frank Gulliver on December 7, 1930, she grew up in Dundalk, Maryland and graduated from Mother Seton High School in Baltimore, Maryland in 1948. She married her husband William G. Douglass later that year. Bill and Jan reared three sons in Maryland: William Gerard (Bill), Thomas Edward (Tom), and Matthew George (Matt) before they retired to North Carolina. They were together seventy years at the time of her passing.

Jan worked as a substitute teacher in the Baltimore County School System and as social director at a nursing home to help her sons pursue higher education. In retirement, Jan enjoyed playing golf and bridge and served her community as a Board of Elections volunteer and as a member of the Youngsville Women’s Club. She enjoyed travel, live music, sewing, and reading, but her favorite time was that spent with her grandchildren watching them play sports, reading to them, or teaching them her baking skills.

Jan was preceded in death by her sons, Bill and Tom, and a her sister, Carole Cross.

She is survived by: her husband, Bill; her son, Matt and his wife, Sandy; her grandchildren, Rachel (James) Nifong, Abby Douglass, Adrianne Douglass, Rebecca (Brandon) Winfield, Jake Douglass, Jenna Douglass, Sarah Douglass; great grandsons, Andrew and Otto. Jan’s family cherishes her memory.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, March 25 2018, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 405 S. Main St., Wake Forest.  (919) 556-5811. Interment will follow at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens, Wake Forest.
